HABITUDES® FOR THE JOURNEY PROGRAMME

Habitudes for the Journey is a programme meant for students who are in their final years of high school and about to transition to college or university, and for students in their first year at college and university to help them transition to later years.

Life is full of transitions: from middle school to high school, from high school to a college or a job, and especially from college to a career. Each transition is an opportunity to establish healthy habits, make smart choices and meet great people, but unfortunately, some students are not able to navigate these intense changes. They find themselves at a destination they do not like because they did not make the right moves at crucial times.

Habitudes for the Journey is a programme meant for students who are in their final years of high school and about to transition to college or university, and for students in their first year at college and university to help them transition to later years.

We utilise the internationally acclaimed Habitudes® Leadership Development Programme material, developed by Growing Leaders in the US. Growing Leaders has been in the field of growing future leaders for the past 25 years. The programme is customised to meet our local needs.

Habitudes® is utilised in over 72 countries, by 8,500 schools, universities, colleges and corporates, and 850,000 young leaders have already been trained with it.

Habitudes® is a breakthrough way to teach leadership principles to the post-modern student. The Art of Navigating Transitions book uses the power of images, conversations, and experiences to illustrate thirteen vital principles on how to handle major changes or transitions in life.

This is an intensive 13-hour programme comprising of core coursework, together with enrichment and teambuilding activities.

The Art of Navigating Transitions helps students and young adults:

  • Master the transitions from school to college and college to career.
  • Create language to talk about real-life issues in a safe and authentic way.
  • Make wise decisions that keep them in school and out of trouble.

The programme covers topics such as boundaries, resilience, values, decision-making, risk taking, focus, goals, and more. The target age range is 16-24 years old.

Summary of the 13 Habitudes®

1. Windshields and Rearview Mirrors (Do not let our past hold us back)
Everyone focuses on something - the past or the future. Often, we must let go of the comfort from our past to make progress.

2. A Compass or a GPS (Values)
A GPS or GOOGLE MAPS will be helpful only if you are on paved roads. If you are entering new areas, you need a compass that shows you true north. Similarly, we need values that provide direction when we enter new territory.

3. A Bridge Not a Wall (Embracing diversity)
0ur natural inclination is to see differences and put up a wall. We are prone to distrust. We must consciously build bridges that can bear the weight of honest disclosure.

4. Baggage Fees (Breaking Free from Emotional Bonds)
Some of us have far too much baggage. Bags in the trunk can weigh us down and get too big to carry. On flights, bags can cost us. We must discard the so they do not prevent us from moving forward.

5. Sturdy Guardrails (Having an accountability partner)
Guardrails keep us on the road during a curve or dangerous spot. Similarly, we must place guardrails in our lives-boundaries or people who keep us from damaging ourselves with poor decisions.

6. Tollbooths or Roadblocks (Leave what is comfortable to pursue what is compelling) In life, challenges will either become tollbooths we progress through, or roadblocks. Sometimes it is like a one-way road - you can only go in one direction. We must pay the toll.

7. Flight Delay (Striking a balance)
Experienced travellers know they’re not in complete control. Delays occur, storms erupt and interruptions happen. Similarly, we must calibrate our expectations, manage disappointments and be realistic about the speed and ease of our lives.

8. Pass on the Left (How to break a friendship in a healthy way)
ln life, when you grow in new directions, be sure to pass others appropriately, making sure you burn no bridges along the way.

9. Tank Half Full or Empty? (Balancing being “happy” and "hungry”)
The answer is both, depending on whether you are emptying it or filling it. In life, we must replace discontentment, where we see things as half-empty, with satisfaction, where we strive to fill things more.

10. Travel Agents or Tour Guides (Having mentors)
The big difference between a travel agent and a tour guide is this: one goes with you and one only tells you where to go. During this season of transition, you will have many travel agents. You must find a tour guide for direction and support.

11. Backseat Drivers (Having trust in others)
We must recognise where we are seated in relationship to others. We must not seek control - but, when behind the wheel, we must assume responsibility.

12. Shortcut or Second Mile (Going the second/extra mile)
We seek the most comfortable and easy and familiar way to get by. Those who go the extra mile may work harder, but they reap benefits through their service that no one else experiences.

13. The Destination vs. the Trip (Setting SMART goals for your life)
People can be divided into two groups: those who are in it only to reach a goal, and those who just enjoy the journey. Actually, both attitudes are good. Once you choose the right destination, the journey can become part of the satisfaction.
